Game RecapPHOENIX (AP)-Brandon Webb threw seven shutout innings for his first win in nearly a month and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Florida Marlins 7-0 on Wednesday night.
Chris Young homered and Scott Hairston was 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs for the Diamondbacks, who won their fifth straight to move within 1 1/2 games of the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.
Webb walked the bases full in the first -- the only three walks he issued -- but settled down to scatter six hits and strike out eight. He had lost his past three decisions and had not won since June 27 against Los Angeles.
Juan Cruz pitched the eighth and Doug Slaten worked the ninth to complete the seven-hitter.
Arizona needed just three pitches to take a 1-0 lead against Scott Olsen (8-8) as Young hit his third leadoff homer of the season.
Olsen was one strike away from escaping the third inning but instead saw six straight Diamondbacks reach base as Arizona scored five runs.
Eric Byrnes hit a two-out single on a 1-2 count and Conor Jackson doubled past a sliding Jeremy Hermida in right field -- the first of Arizona's six doubles -- scoring Byrnes to make it 2-0. Mark Reynolds doubled to the wall in left, scoring Jackson, and Chris Snyder reached on an infield single off Olsen's glove.
Stephen Drew's line single to center made it 4-0 and Hairston followed with a two-run double to the base of the wall in left-center to give Arizona a 6-0 lead.
Arizona added another run in the fourth when Byrnes doubled just inside the left-field line and Jackson hit an RBI single to center.
Olsen allowed seven runs and 11 hits, both season highs, over five innings. He walked three and struck out four.
Game NotesArizona manager Bob Melvin said LHP Randy Johnson remains on schedule to throw a bullpen session Friday. "I was surprised with some of the things I read when he came in today and said he was ready to go on Friday," Melvin said before the game. "I didn't hear what he said to the media yesterday but I read some of the things and seemed like there were different versions of it." ... Johnson has been on the DL since June 29 with a herniated disk in his lower back. ... Marlins 3B Miguel Cabrera doubled in the fifth to extend his career-best hitting streak to 15 games. ... Diamondbacks 2B Orlando Hudson preserved the shutout in the fifth with a diving stop of a hard grounder by Mike Jacobs with runners on second and third and two outs. |
