Game Recap

PHOENIX (AP) -- The Washington Nationals finally figured out a way to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Jesus Flores hit a tying homer in the ninth and Felipe Lopez drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly as the Nationals rallied from a five-run deficit to beat the Diamondbacks 7-6 on Sunday afternoon.

It was Washington's first win in seven games between the clubs this year.

With Washington trailing 6-5 in the ninth, Flores hit an 0-2 delivery from Arizona closer Jose Valverde 337 feet inside the left-field foul pole.

Robert Fick followed with a triple to center and scored on Lopez's sacrifice fly to left.

Valverde (1-4) blew his sixth save in 41 chances.

Jon Rauch (8-2) pitched one inning of relief to earn the win. He allowed one run on two hits with a strikeout.

Chad Cordero pitched the ninth for his 26th save in 34 chances.

The Diamondbacks allowed the Nationals to tie the game with a four-run eighth inning, capped by Ryan Church's two-run, tying homer.

Arizona quickly responded. Rookie Justin Upton led off the eighth with a single off Rauch and took third on Mark Reynolds' single. One out later, Stephen Drew hit a sacrifice fly to right field.

Reynolds had three hits, including a homer, and Eric Byrnes also homered for Arizona, which saw its lead over San Diego in the NL West shrink to three games.

Arizona's usually reliable bullpen cost starter Micah Owings a chance for his first victory since June 20, a span of 10 starts.

Owings retired the first 14 men he faced before walking Ronnie Belliard on a 3-2 count in the fifth. Owings then hit Tony Batista before giving up a two-out RBI single to Flores.

Owings allowed one run and four hits in 6 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out eight.

Manager Bob Melvin lifted Owings with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh, and reliever Tony Pena retired pinch-hitter Brian Schneider on an inning-ending double play.

In the eighth, Pena allowed an RBI triple to Ryan Zimmerman and a run-scoring single to Austin Kearns.

With Arizona leading 5-3 and a runner at first, Melvin brought in lefty Doug Slaten to face Church, who hit a 2-1 pitch 371 feet inside the right field foul pole to tie the game at 5.

Arizona jumped on Washington starter Mike Bacsik (5-7) for two first-inning runs, both coming with two out.

Orlando Hudson singled, took second on a wild pitch and scored on Conor Jackson's single. Jackson took second on the throw to the plate and scored on Reynolds' single.

With one out in the third, Byrnes hit a 3-2 pitch 379 feet into the left field seats to give Arizona a 3-0 lead. It was the 18th homer for Byrnes, who last week agreed to a $30-million, three-year contract extension through 2010.

After Jackson followed with a single, Reynolds hit Bacsik's first pitch 410 feet to left field to make it 5-0.

Bacsik allowed five runs and eight hits in four innings, walking one and striking out one.

Game Notes

Bacsik made his first start since allowing Barry Bonds' 756th career home run Tuesday night in San Francisco. Bacsik was the 446th different pitcher to give up a homer to Bonds. ... Arizona SS Stephen Drew's double in the third inning snapped an 0-for-18 slump.
