Game Recap

DENVER (AP) -- Based on his pitching line, it would appear Livan Hernandez had an easy time in his seven-inning outing against the Colorado Rockies.

Hernandez disagreed.

"It was tough out there," the Arizona Diamondbacks right-handed pitcher said. "They have some tough outs in their lineup, especially those two outfielders, (Matt Holliday and Brad Hawpe).

Hernandez allowed four hits over seven innings, singled twice and scored a run in the Diamondbacks' 3-1 victory over Colorado on Thursday.

The win gave the Diamondbacks two victories in the three-game series and their sixth series win of the year.

Hernandez held Holliday to 1-for-4 with a fourth-inning double. Hawpe was 0-for-3 a day after hitting two home runs.

There were only two other hard-hit balls in Hernandez's 116-pitch performance. Todd Helton backed right fielder Carlos Quentin to the wall in the first inning to catch his fly ball and Chris Young ran down Garrett Atkins' drive to the wall in center in the second.

"He's impressive because the game moves very slow for him," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said. "He doesn't get rushed."

Hernandez (4-2) gave up a run while walking four and striking out two.

His only real jam came in the fourth inning when the Rockies loaded the bases on the one-out double by Holliday and walks to Atkins and Hawpe with two outs. But Hernandez got Yorvit Torrealba to ground out to short.

"It's no big deal for me," Hernandez said. "I've walked hitters over the years to get into trouble and I've been able to pitch my way out of it."

Orlando Hudson, who was 1-for-3 with a double, agreed.

"That wasn't his first rodeo," Hudson said of the Colorado fourth. "He's been there before."

Hernandez was more impressed with his offense.

"You saw the real Livan Hernandez out there with a bat," he said. "I was swinging the bat like I can."

He was 2-for-3 for his 30th multiple hit game of his career and a hit short of his career high.

He is batting a season-high .333.

Eric Byrnes had an RBI single and triple. Young had two hits and scored a run for the Diamondbacks. Jose Valverde pitched the ninth for his 14th save in 16 tries.

Colorado wasted a good outing from Josh Fogg (1-5), who allowed two runs and seven hits over seven innings. Fogg has lost his past four starts and hasn't won since April 25 against the New York Mets.

Young hit a leadoff double to left center in the first inning. Two outs later, Byrnes singled off Troy Tulowitzki's glove at short to score Young for a 1-0 lead.

Arizona added an unearned run in the third inning, loading the bases on singles by Hernandez and Young and a one-out walk to Hudson. Fogg appeared to get out of trouble, but Tulowitzki misplayed Miquel Montero's grounder to score Hernandez and make it 2-0.

Hernandez didn't allow a hit until the fourth, when Tulowitzki singled to center but was thrown out at second by Young when he tried to stretch it into a double.

"He's so crafty," said Tulowitzki, who was 2-for-2 against Hernandez. "He has that big slow curveball and uses both sides of the plate with it and his slider."

Tulowitzki's two-out RBI single in the fifth made it 2-1.

Tony Clark made it 3-1 in the eighth inning with a pinch-hit RBI single off Jeremy Affeldt.

"How do you break out of this rut at home with your offense?" Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said. "We got the start we needed from Fogg, but we weren't able to back anything up really on offense."

Game Notes

The Diamondbacks designated INF Donnie Sadler for assignment. ... X-rays were negative on the left wrist of OF Scott Hairston, who was hit by a pitch in Wednesday's game. ... Byrnes has an 11-game hitting streak. ... Colorado Avalanche coach Joel Quenneville was a guest of the Rockies. ... The Rockies have won only one home series and one on the road. ... OF Willy Taveras has reached base safely in 13 consecutive games.
