PHOENIX (AP) -- The Arizona Diamondbacks staged another comeback Thursday night. This time they did it early, and without the high drama.

The Diamondbacks fell behind by three runs in the first inning, then rallied behind a pair of old-timers to beat the San Diego Padres 7-4.

Tony Clark had his second two-homer game of the season, and Livan Hernandez silenced the Padres after a tough first inning.

The victory came 24 hours after Stephen Drew hit a two-run homer off Trevor Graham with two outs in the ninth to give the Diamondbacks a stunning 3-2 win that spoiled Jake Peavy's incredible 16-strikeout, seven-inning performance in which he struck out nine in a row.

"I think there probably was a little bit of carryover," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said.

Clark and Hernandez made Thursday's game much less thrilling.

"The comforting thing is knowing that we've got Livan on the hill, who's been there, done that," Clark said. "You hope with nine innings left you can hold them steady and we can find some ways to scratch some runs across."

Scratch indeed.

Clark broke a 3-3 tie with a 409-foot shot into the pool area in right-center leading off the fourth. He drove in two more with a towering homer to right with no outs in the sixth.

"More than anything else, you just try to get the head of the bat on the ball and you take your chances from there," said Clark, whose playing time has increased with Conor Jackson nursing a sore hamstring.

Both home runs came off San Diego starter Chris Young (2-2).

"Just missed location," Young said, "too many pitches where I missed my location. Hitters at this level are too good to continually do that. You can get away with it a little bit, but if you continue it on the whole, it's going to burn you."

The 34-year-old Clark also homered twice against Colorado on April 15. He has 23 multi-homer games.

"When he hits one," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said, "it just seems like he's going to hit two."

Hernandez (2-1) gave up a three-run homer to Adrian Gonzalez in the first, then blanked the Padres for the next six innings. The 32-year-old Cuban allowed three runs on four hits in seven innings, striking out two and walking three.

Hernandez was upset with himself for giving up his first home run of the season.

"I felt so good, and something like that, it's not right," he said. "It's a pitch I've got to throw, but no hanging. I tried to come back and not make a lot of mistakes."

Jose Valverde pitched the ninth for his eighth save in nine chances.

With Game 3 of the Phoenix Suns' opening-round playoff series against the Lakers on television from Los Angeles, only 16,792 showed up at Chase Field. That broke the previous low of 18,030 set last May 17, also against San Diego.

Gonzalez tied a franchise record with his seventh home run in April, and broke the Padres' mark for most RBIs in the month with 23.

But the 3-0 lead was short-lived.

Chad Tracy led off the Arizona second with a double, then scored on Drew's one-out single. Carlos Quentin walked, then Miguel Montero reached when the pitcher Young bobbled a slow roller, and the bases were loaded.

Drew scored on a wild pitch, then Hernandez' RBI sacrifice fly brought home Quentin to tie it at 3.

The Diamondbacks added a run in the seventh when their Chris Young reached on a bunt single, stole second and scored on an Eric Byrnes single.

Tracy was 2-for-3 with a double and scored twice. Drew doubled and had an RBI single.

Jose Cruz Jr. was 3-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored. He led off the eighth with a double off reliever Doug Slaten, then scored when Brian Giles singled.

Young gave up six runs, five earned, in 5 1-3 innings. He walked six, struck out three and had two wild pitches.

"Chris' strength is moving the fastball in and out, up and down," Padres manager Bud Black said. "They just squared up a couple of balls tonight that were in locations where he didn't intend it to go."

Game Notes

The Padres are expected to activate C Josh Bard (left groin strain) from the 15-day disabled list on Friday, when they play Los Angeles to open a six-game home stand. ... The Diamondbacks won a series for the first time since taking two of three at home from Colorado April 13-15. That also was the last time they had won two in a row.
