Game Recap

SAN FRANCISCO -- Chris Snyder called for the fastball in, and Edgar Gonzalez's pitch was on target.

Barry Bonds was jammed a bit and popped the ball up towards the third-base stands. The Giants slugger looked up at the ball and back down at Chad Tracy as the third baseman drifted towards the railing. When he got there, Tracy leaned as far as he could, but the ball was just out of his reach.

"It was close," he would say later. "Real close."

At the time, it didn't seem like a big play. After all, it was just the second inning and it was a foul ball, but when Gonzalez tried to come inside with a fastball again with the next pitch and missed his spot, Bonds knocked it well over the wall in center.

Just like that, the game was over. Well, not over exactly, but it did prove to be the decisive blow as the Giants beat the D-backs, 1-0, on a chilly Saturday afternoon at AT&T Park.

"It was a fastball," Snyder said. "We were trying to go in, and he left it over the plate. A guy like that, if you're going in, you've got to make sure you get it in. If you miss, you have to miss in, because if you miss over the plate, that'll happen."

The win was the fourth in a row for the surging Giants, while the D-backs have lost five of their last six and have struggled mightily to get hits with runners in scoring position.

Saturday was no exception, as Arizona was 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left five runners on in the game's final two innings.

"We had plenty of opportunities that we have to take advantage of," outfielder Eric Byrnes said. "If we don't take advantage of them, we're not going to win a whole lot of games. We've got to take advantage of the opportunities when we have them."

Before and after the Bonds homer, Gonzalez (1-2) pitched masterfully. The right-hander changed speeds and kept the San Francisco hitters guessing.

It appeared the Giants might get to him in the seventh when they put runners on second and third to start the inning, but he got Ryan Klesko to ground weakly to short and then struck out Bengie Molina and Randy Winn to end the inning.

"He was on, definitely on," Snyder said of Gonzalez. "Pitched a great game. That's by far probably the best game I've seen him pitch ever since I've been catching. He threw good."

So did Giants starter Barry Zito. The lefty was able to throw his fastball and curve for strikes, which didn't bode well for the Arizona hitters.

The D-backs finally got Zito out of the game with one out in the eighth. He was lifted with runners on first and second, and after striking Chris Young, reliever Brad Hennessey walked Orlando Hudson to load the bases.

Carlos Quentin then hit a rocket one-hopper just to the left of second base, where the slick-fielding Omar Vizquel fielded it and flipped to second for the inning-ending force.

"When I hit it, I thought it was up the middle, but Vizquel is good out there," Quentin said. "He took it away. Some things didn't go our way, but we've got to start making them go our way."

The D-backs had another chance in the ninth as they put runners on first and second with two outs against closer Armando Benitez, but pinch-hitter Alberto Callaspo hit a tapper to second to end the game.

The Giants also were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position, but because of the Bonds homer and Zito's pitching, it didn't matter.

"We've just got to fight through it," manager Bob Melvin said of his team's struggles with runners in scoring position. "We had a good spring; we started out fairly well to start the season. We're just in a little bit of a slump right now."

Game Notes

The Arizona Diamondbacks are still planning on Randy Johnson pitching at Chase Field when the team returns from this west coast road trip.
