Game Recap

DENVER (AP) -- Troy Tulowitzki may get fooled once.

But not twice.

Tulowitzki made the necessary adjustments against Arizona closer Jose Valverde in Colorado's 4-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in 11 innings Tuesday night.

The rookie shortstop hit a low fastball off Valverde to double in the tying run and then scored the game-winner on third baseman Alberto Callaspo's error in the Rockies' come-from-behind win.

Valverde struck out Tulowitzki on a high fastball to end the game Monday. Tulowitzki wasn't going to swing at anything but a pitch down low.

"I told myself to lay off the high stuff, but it's hard when he throws 95," he said with a grin. "I wanted to take a good swing. I hit it real well."

Todd Helton and Matt Holliday led off the 11th with singles against Valverde (0-1), but Brad Hawpe hit into a double play. Tulowitzki's hit drove in pinch-runner Jamey Carroll, then Callaspo couldn't handle Chris Iannetta's grounder.

Iannetta was surprised that Callaspo even got a glove on it. He thought it was through the infield. He was even waving Tulowitzki home as he ran down the line.

"This is awesome," Iannetta said.

Callaspo had a hard time explaining what happened on the play.

"I make that play all the time," he said. "It was a bad play."

Right fielder Eric Byrnes almost saved the day for Arizona on Tulowitzki's double. The ball hit him in the wrist as he dove toward the wall for it.

"That was a valiant effort," Tulowitzki said. "I thought it was over Byrnes' head for sure."

Byrnes beat himself up over dropping what would've been a tough catch.

"I have to make the play," he said.

The Diamondbacks took the lead in the top half when Stephen Drew hit a two-out single off Byung-Hyun Kim (1-0).

Kim got the first two outs in the 11th, but walked Chris Snyder and hit Callaspo with a pitch, setting up Drew's single that just eluded Helton's glove at first base. Hawpe's throw from right field wasn't in time to get Snyder sliding into home.

"We were inches away from putting it away and didn't do it," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said.

The Rockies relied on their bullpen to get the win. Kim, Ramon Ramirez, Brian Fuentes, LaTroy Hawkins and Manuel Corpas each pitched an inning after starter Jeff Francis came out after six solid innings. Francis scattered seven hits and struck out four.

"The bullpen did a great job," Francis said. "That's what we expect."

Rockies manager Clint Hurdle served a one-game suspension for a dustup March 13 in a spring training game against San Diego. Francis was also suspended for his role, but appealed his penalty.

Bench coach Jamie Quirk filled in for Hurdle.

"It's big for these kids [Tulowitzki and Iannetta] because those guys are going to have some growing pains, but they're players," Quirk said. "They were drafted to be players. They're in the majors. They're ready to put their mark on it."

After the game, teammates were stopping by Tulowitzki's locker to rub him on the head. He couldn't stop grinning.

"This is a big boost of confidence," Tulowitzki said. "But more than that it helps the team get a win."

Tony Pena threw two scoreless innings for Arizona. Pena was aided in the eighth by the arm of left fielder Scott Hairston.

Hawpe lined a two-out single to left, but Hairston threw out Garrett Atkins at the plate. Atkins had broken an 0-for-8 start to the season with a one-out double.

Livan Hernandez went seven innings for Arizona, giving up five hits.

After the game, Iannetta didn't want to talk about his contribution nearly as much as Tulowitzki's role.

"I was excited for him," said Iannetta, who had an RBI double in the second. "I was happy for him. This was a great win for us."

Game Notes

Arizona LHP Randy Johnson threw 60 pitches and went four innings against the Triple-A Tucson Sidewinders in a minor league camp game in Tucson, Ariz. ... Colorado's Jeff Baker is 2-for-2 as a pinch-hitter. He singled in the seventh after homering the day before.
