SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The Arizona Diamondbacks might still be on a winning streak if not for Omar Vizquel's dazzling defense.

No wonder pitcher Kevin Correia is campaigning for the San Francisco Giants to bring back the 11-time Gold Glove shortstop next year.

At 40, Vizquel has shown his defense is as sharp as ever, even if he's struggled on offense for much of 2007 -- and despite the fact he nearly fumbled his cologne in the clubhouse after Tuesday night's win.

Vizquel flipped the ball from the ground to start a game-ending double play and also had another nice toss to second in the ninth to preserve a 2-1 victory over the Diamondbacks that snapped Arizona's six-game winning streak.

"I still don't think there's anybody better," Correia said. "Hopefully, he's around next year for us."

Dan Ortmeier tripled to start the eighth inning and scored the go-ahead run on Pedro Feliz's sacrifice fly, but San Francisco's defense was even more exciting.

Chris Young homered in the fourth for the NL West-leading Diamondbacks, who lead second-place San Diego by 2½ games after the Padres won 9-4 at Dodger Stadium.

Tyler Walker (2-0) got the final two outs of the eighth for the win, then Ortmeier hit his fourth triple off Bob Wickman (3-4) in the bottom half. The ball bounced in Ortmeier's favor, skipping to the wall in right-center -- and even Ortmeier was thinking he might only be able to "stretch it into a double."

"This is the trickiest right field in the league," Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin said. "If you don't play here much it can be difficult. There are angles here. It's an acquired taste."

Eric Byrnes had three hits and stole his career-best 45th base after his leadoff single in the sixth. Arizona missed a chance then, and again in the eighth.

After Byrnes' one-out single, Tony Clark grounded into a 3-6-1 double play when Vizquel leapt over Byrnes to throw out Clark at first.

"Who couldn't love Omar?" Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

In the sixth, Correia walked Mark Reynolds two batters after a single by Byrnes and received a visit from pitching coach Dave Righetti. Young then walked to load the bases. Scott Munter relieved and got Justin Upton to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Brian Wilson pitched the ninth for his third save, getting Upton to ground into a game-ending double play that was started by Vizquel.

"Who made nice plays?" Vizquel joked afterward.

Arizona starter Edgar Gonzalez retired the first nine San Francisco batters before Rajai Davis reached on an infield single to start the fourth. Nate Schierholtz followed with an RBI double that tied the game at 1, then Barry Bonds was intentionally walked for the 43rd time one out later.

Bengie Molina grounded into an inning-ending double play, and the Giants hit into another double play in the fifth after having three Monday night.

"Everything was there, whatever I wanted to throw," Gonzalez said.

Young sent a 3-2 pitch from Correia into the left-field seats with two outs in the fourth for his 30th homer of the year, a Diamondbacks rookie record.

Flags were flown at half-staff in the Giants' waterfront ballpark on the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Powerful pictures of the tragedy were shown on the main center-field scoreboard with the message "9.11.01 We Will Never Forget," and a moment of silence was held before the first pitch.

Outside the stadium, a Sept. 11 tribute was set up in front of a statue of Hall of Famer Willie Mays. It featured red, white and blue banners with thousands of names of the victims.

A handful of kayaks turned out in McCovey Cove on a cool Bay Area evening, when the first-pitch temperature was 61 degrees.

But Bonds never came close to a splash-hit home run. The home run king, with 762 career homers, went 0-for-2 before being replaced by Ortmeier in left field to start the eighth.

Gonzalez, Arizona's shaggy-haired, gum-chomping righty, hung tough in his ninth start of the year and first since June 26 against the Dodgers. His last win as a starter came June 16 at Baltimore, but he is 6-0 since losing April 21 in San Francisco.

Gonzalez allowed one run and three hits in six innings, struck out one and walked one.

Correia, chewing his blue bubble gum with nearly as much gusto as Gonzalez, lasted only 5 1-3 innings in his fifth start of the year and failed to earn a decision after winning his previous three starts. He is 0-1 in nine career appearances against Arizona.

Diamondbacks 2B Emilio Bonifacio earned a second straight start and led off after getting a pair of RBI singles in his first big league start Monday. ... Bonds has 131 total walks. ... Upton, who began the year at Class-A Visalia, stole his first base after his two-out single in the second.
