Game RecapPHOENIX -- The Cincinnati Reds will spend October at home.They did all they could to make sure the Arizona Diamondbacks will too. Corey Patterson homered to give the Cincinnati Reds a 2-1 victory in 10 innings over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday, sending the Diamondbacks to their eighth loss in nine games. Arizona remains 4½ games behind the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers, who lost 1-0 in 10 innings at Colorado. The Reds have won three straight series over the Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee and Arizona, all of them contending for the postseason. "I think to us, it's kind of our playoffs, and we're playing great the past few series," Patterson said. "To end it on this note like we did today, it was a good win for us." With one out, the .202-hitting Patterson hit a 3-2 pitch high off the right-field foul pole against Jon Rauch (4-8). Patterson's shot was Cincinnati's third hit and ended a string of 19 straight retired by the Diamondbacks. "Nineteen in a row? I didn't realize that," said Patterson, who has nine homers. "We just kept fighting hard and we got the win." David Weathers (4-6) pitched a scoreless ninth. Francisco Cordero gave up a pair of singles in the 10th before striking out Chris Young for his 31st save in 37 chances. The Reds also beat the Diamondbacks in 10 innings on Saturday night when former Diamondback Micah Owings doubled home the winning run. Cincinnati played its seventh straight one-run game, and improved to 5-2 in that span. It's the longest string of one-run games since Atlanta played seven straight in 2005, according to Elias Sports Bureau. "We want to win series and we want to win close ballgames," manager Dusty Baker said. "The guys are feeling really good about themselves right now." The Diamondbacks aren't. Arizona led the Dodgers by 4½ games on Aug. 29, but is 3-11 since then. "We're not concerned about the Dodgers," Arizona first baseman Tony Clark said. "We're concerned about ourselves." The Diamondbacks let this one slip away one at-bat at a time. They stranded 17 runners and went 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position, leaving the bases loaded in the seventh and eighth innings. For the series, Arizona went 2-for-35 with runners in scoring position. "Really frustrating," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said. "We've just been miserable this whole series with runners in scoring position. "It just seems like we put more and more pressure on ourselves, the more guys we get on there and the more the game goes along," Melvin said. The Diamondbacks had 10 hits, but none when they really needed them. With the game tied at 1-1 in the eighth, former Red Adam Dunn came up with two out and the bases loaded. Baker brought in lefty Bill Bray, who had walked Dunn with the bases loaded on Friday night. This time, he struck out Dunn on four pitches as the Chase Field crowd of 27,297 erupted into boos. Cincinnati took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Jay Bruce hit a 2-1 pitch from Max Scherzer into the sparsely populated right-field bleachers for his 18th homer. Making his 14th career appearance and his fifth start, Scherzer allowed two hits in six innings. He walked three and struck out nine. It's the second straight solid start for Scherzer, who struck out a career-high 11 batters at Los Angeles last weekend. Scherzer pitched more efficiently than Reds starter Johnny Cueto but had the same no-decision to show for his efforts. The Diamondbacks put two baserunners on in each of the first four innings and failed to score against Cueto, who walked six in the first four innings but worked out of trouble each time. "Johnny Cueto really battled tonight," Baker said. The Diamondbacks finally reached Cueto in the fifth, when Justin Upton led off with a homer to left field, his 12th. Upton had a career-high four hits. Cueto went five innings, allowing a run and four hits. He walked six and struck out four. Game NotesArizona SS Stephen Drew went home to Georgia after the death of his grandmother. He's expected to return for Tuesday night's game against San Francisco. ... Arizona LF Conor Jackson missed a third straight game with a sore shoulder. Melvin said Jackson could be used as a pinch-hitter on Monday and return to the lineup on Tuesday. ... Arizona RHP Brandon Lyon, who lost the closer's job on Saturday, pitched a 1-2-3 seventh. ... Cueto's start was the 42nd by a Cincinnati rookie this season. |
